Front page for the Royals..
01.17.05 (12:48 pm)   [edit]

As we speak the headline on the front page of yahoo sports MLB section is "Sweeney trade talk surfaces in Kansas City."  Jeff Passan did a cursory job of examining potential trade targets in the K.C. Star.

There are a couple of key issues that must be tackled when dealing with any trade of Mike Sweeney.

  1. Salary:  Mike Sweeney is owed 33 million dollars over the next 3 seasons including this one.  There may be some debate as to whether Sweeney is worth that kind of money even when healthy.  If he is traded the value becomes 3 years at 37.5 million dollars.  Considering the difficulties the Cubs are having in moving Sammy Sosa you have to wonder just how many clubs can be considered suitors for Mike Sweeney.

  2. Health:  I covered this in the previous blog but Mike Sweeney hasn't been healthy for 3 seasons.  Back problems are typically chronic and you have to wonder about his durability.  His trade value has never been lower.

  3. Market:  Trading Mike Sweeney during the last two off-seasons would have been a straight salary dump.  The bite of the recession was felt and spending tailed off dramatically.  One reason I believe that Sweeney trade talks have escalated is because the owners have re-donned their insanity caps and handed their checkbooks to sports agents.  The market is completely out of whack.  3 yrs and 37.5 million dollars isn't so bad when Derek Lowe and Eric Milton are getting similar packages.

  4. Suckers.. er.. Suitors:  Mets, Orioles, Dodgers, Mariners..

  • Mets/Mariners:  Whoever loses the Carlos Delgado sweepstakes will be itching for a first basemen.  It helps that I don't think that either of these front offices are particularly bright.  They will probably look at the acquistion as: " At least he's cheaper than Delgado "

& nbsp;   Mets: Yusmeiro Petit and Victor Diaz

& nbsp;   Ma riners:  Travis Blackley/Bobby Madritsch

& nbsp;   Orioles: Erik Bedard and Matt Riley

  • Dodgers: DePodesta won't overpay for Sweeney, we'd have to accept marginal prospects in return.  Probably the guys he got from the D-backs in the Green deal.

Please trade Ken Harvey to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays while you are at it.

Shut up Sweeney

An article in the K.C. Star by Jeff Passan details the frustrations of Mike Sweeney and the snow job he believes the organization has done in relation to improving the team around him..

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=knight- sweeneyivebeenmisled&" title="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=knight- sweeneyivebeenmisled&" target="_blank"http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/n...;prov=knight&type=lgn s

This stance on Mike's part is completely plausible as his performance over the last 3 seasons has been nothing but... er.. well..

Since not quite earning his 11 million dollar salary in 2002 with 126 games of stellar performance with a .979 OPS, Sweeney has posted 108 and 106 game seasons with underachieving offensive numbers.

In those injury shortened seasons Sweeney has had and OPS of .858 and .851 respectively.  Last season his OBP was only .347.

The most frustrating thing about Mike Sweeney's injuries is the fact that it may be the only thing preventing Ken Harvey from being someone else's first basemen.  The organization's fetish with Harvey is the last vestige of counter sabermetric principles that used to dictate the actions of my favorite ballclub.  I can't help but think that the old guard looks at Ken Harvey and sees the old K.C. system.  Creating hacktastic mockery's of George Brett that have the ability to post empty batting averages and smack groundball rbi's in clutch situations.

So Mike Sweeney is demanding a trade? How bout you play a full season at your previously stellar level.  I'm curious as to what team Mike Sweeney could put over the top as a part-time DH.  Light the world on fire and get us a couple of prospects at the deadline.  Then take the money we owe you and give it all to Zack Grienke.

Joe Thurston
01.12.05 (4:01 pm)   [edit]
Former super-prospect second basemen Joe Thurston was designated for assignment by the Dodgers. There are a few readers out there who I'm sure are stunned by a walk-aholic such as myself advocating his pick-up. Yeah.. but he's free.

Joe Thurston didn't always have abhorrent plate discipline. As a 20 year old in low A-ball he had a 27/34 K:BB ratio in 277 AB's. The next season is was 56/61 in 551 ABs. At AA he drew 48 walks against only 65 strikeouts.

Thurston didn't take plate discipline ironically, until his breakout season at Las Vegas in AAA. 39 doubles, 13 triples, 12 homeruns and a .334 average made him the hottest second base prospect in baseball. But he had only 25 walks in 587 AB's.

Thurston has speed. He stole 43 bases in single A. Thurston can hit for average.. .296 in 7 minor league seasons. He doesn't strike out much and he plays a premium defensive position.

Pick him up.. Send him to Wichita/Omaha.. wherever Gotay/Murphy aren't. Tell him to take some pitches and work on his defense.

Moneyball anyone?
01.11.05 (6:58 pm)   [edit]

The Toronto Blue Jays have just recently completed signings of Billy Koch and Scott Schoenweis for 900k and 5.25 million respectively.  J.P. Ricciardi, one of the heralded new wave of statistical GM's is beginning to look like a guy that got promoted a little too quickly.  You have to remember that the Jays originally wanted Paul DePodesta, but had to settle for Ricciardi as Depo was waiting for a better job to come open.  Exchange rates.. they are a bitch.

Between these signings and the insulting 2 yr 12 million dollar offer they gave Carlos Delgado I'm really beginning to lean towards writing off Ricciardi as a GM.  When you consider that Hinske is beginning to look like Terrance Long Redux it sure appears as if J.P. may have dumped the scouting side of his player development staff a little too quickly.

On a related but unrelated note.  I heard a clip of Allard Baird of WHB 810 talking about acquiring a corner OF and the overall state of the organization.  I know Baird has taken his shots over the years but honestly, everytime I here him speak he says the right things and comes off as a fairly intelligent guy.  He got this organization to acknowledge that there was more to hitting than wailing at fastballs.  His interest is in Austin Kearns, as it should be and he is pressing hard for a corner OF.  I think the best snapshot of Allard as a GM came in response to a question on Darrell May.

He was asked if May's comments during the season last year about the team not backing him up and supporting him in his effort to not lose 20 games affected his status on the team.  I know there are at least 10-15 chemistry prone 'old school' GM's that would have said that they can't have that kind of attitude on the team and it certainly would have contributed to that decision.  Baird said as soon as you let what the players say dictate more than what they do on the field you begin to make bad decisions.  That is the correct answer.  Its not rocket science, but its absolutely the correct thing to say and practice.

The other thing I like about Baird is that he is honest about the mistakes he has made.  In discussing the draft he acknowledged the failure of the 2001 draft.  He claims responsibilities for the failures of the team and passes the buck to no one.

I really hope this team turns it around soon because I'd hate to see what would happen if Baird leaves.  He has assembled a nice team in the front office including Deric Ladnier, Muzzy Jackson, and Danny Rowland.  The fruits of the 2002-2004 drafts will make this team competitive eventually, of that I have no doubt.  I just hope that Allard is around to see it.
